CHILDREN STORY: What would you do?

Writer's picture: I can & I willI can & I will

This is the 1st adventure story of 3 siblings: Zoe, Chloe and Joe. Please print it for your kids to inspire them to see opportunity in any difficulty they face. Enjoy!

“Chloe! Don’t eat it like that!” Zoe runs to her sister and takes a peanut butter cup out of her hand. The girls are out playing in the yard by the forest.

Chloe is only two, and left the wrapper on her candy. Zoe is the oldest, and takes charge.

Chloe wants her candy back, so Zoe rips off the wrapper and hands it to her. Chloe grabs the half-melted chocolate and eats it, safe from the wrapper.

“Way to go, Einstein,” Joe mutters while eyeing an odd stone close to the edge of the yard. “What’s an Einstein?” Chloe asks, confused. As she questions Joe, a stone nearby flashes light. The children all jump back, startled. It fades back to normal stone color, and Joe checks it out.

“Don’t touch it! Why am I always telling you guys what to do?” Zoe screams.

Ignoring his sister, Joe picks up the stone and it’s warm to the touch. He looks it over and sees it’s a real stone. He puts it in his pocket and runs back to his sisters.

“You’re going to keep it?” Zoe asks sternly.

“You’re not the boss of me!” Joe shouts.

“Maybe I am, we might need it!” Joe shouts as he picks up a crying Chloe. He calms her down, and they head inside because it’s getting dark.

Joe hid the stone under his pillow, and pulls it out all sneaky like. He puts it in his pocket.

“Maybe this will help me be in charge for once,” Joe says to himself. “Is everyone ready to go? I’m still not sure we should bring Chloe.” Zoe says, watching the two-year-old try to put a Lego in her ear.

“It’s going to be fine, I have a good feeling.” Joe says.

Zoe zips up her backpack full of snacks for the trip, and Joe checks to make sure the stone is still in his pocket. Zoe grabs Chloe, and they head out for the day.

The forest is even bigger than the kids imagined. Zoe is leading the trio down a path of stomped on leaves. It looks like other people have been here before. Mom told them to stay on the path.

“Where are we even heading to?” Joe asks. The stone in his pocket has gotten warmer since they left the house.

“Mom said there should be a clearing up ahead where we can have lunch, we should do that.” Zoe says.

Chloe pulls another peanut butter cup out of her pocket, and takes the wrapper off. As the one in charge, Zoe double checks it.

As the kids keep walking, Zoe gets a bad feeling. Part of her wants to go another way. Then, she hears a noise in the bushes. It sounds like an animal.

“What was that?” Joe asks. The stone is growing warmer.

“I don’t know, but I think it needs help.” Zoe says.

She grabs Chloe, and throws her on her back. Those little legs couldn’t walk over the sticks.

They walk towards the sound of howling, and they are getting close. Joe is nervous. As they leave the trees, they see a fuzzy lump.

“Kitty!” Chloe shouts and points.

“Yeah, it is,” Zoe says, agreeing. The kids slowly walk towards the fuzzy lump, noticing it looks hurt.

“Oh no, what are we going to do?” Joe asks. He thinks they should leave.

“We have to help it!” Zoe says, putting Chloe down.

“Stay right here,” she tells her. Zoe walks up to the cat, who has now noticed the children. Zoe notices the cat’s leg is bent, and probably broken.

“Hey, little guy, we want to help!” She says as she approaches.

The cat looks at her, and is scared. With a hurt leg, the cat struggles to try and stand up to get away, and falls down.

“Don’t get hurt!” Joe shouts. As he shouts, the stone in his pocket burns hot. He pulls it out and it’s flashing like crazy.

The sisters turn to their brother as he drops the stone, too hot to keep holding. It flashes and a figure appears. The first thing the kids see is a head of wild white hair.

“I’m scared!” Chloe cries. Zoe picks her back up and holds her tight.

“Hopefully it’s a nice ghost,” she whispers, reassuring Chloe and herself.

The figure becomes visible, and an old man is standing in front of the kids.

“Well, what do we have here? Why are you children out on your own like this?” The supposed ghost asks. The children are too shaken to answer. “Oh, I see I have scared you. Not to worry, I am Albert Einstein! Renowned scientist and pet lover!” The children ease up after they hear the familiar name.

“What are you doing here?” Zoe asks him. “Well, you kids look like you’re in trouble. You know, I had a cat named Tiger. I have a soft spot for animals. Tiger hated when it rained.” Einstein says, looking off to reminisce.

“So, are you here to save the cat?” Joe asks eagerly.

“Heavens, no. I am here to give you a hint, though. That hint is, in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” Einstein smiles confidently.

“That’s it?” Zoe asks, frustrated.

“That should be enough, see you later!” Einstein waves and vanishes. The stone goes cold and Joe runs to pick it up.

“Wow, that wasn’t very helpful.” Zoe says, annoyed.

“So, what are we going to do?” Joe asks.

“Well, it’s going to be tough, but I think we should try to take the cat back to the house.” Zoe says, looking at the sad cat.

“We’ve been walking for hours! That’s going to be so hard.” Joe whines.

“Kitty!” Chloe yells, running towards the cat.

“Chloe no! Why do I always have to watch you!” Zoe yells.

She starts to run towards Chloe, but sees that the cat has calmed down as Chloe gets closer. The cat lets Chloe pet it, and Chloe tries to pick the cat up.

“Oh, that’s great Chloe, bring him over here!” Zoe has decided that it’s probably a boy cat.

Chloe drags the cat over to Zoe. The cat must like Chloe, because he’s being very patient. Zoe can’t stop thinking about what Einstein says to them. What opportunity could come out of this?

“Kitty!” Chloe says as she continues holding the cat. Zoe starts to think they might be able to bring it home.

“But what will mom say?” Joe asks.

“The cat needs help!” Zoe says confidently, as she tries to take the cat from Chloe to carry. Being the oldest, she thinks it’s best that she carries the cat.

Annoyed with the kids, but happy for the help, the cat gives in and lets Zoe carry him.

“We should go back the way we came,” Joe says.

“Well, duh,” Zoe snaps back.

The group heads back the way they came to make it back to the house.

“Who was that ghost?” Chloe asks.

“He said he was Albert Einstein, I think I have heard Dad talk about him before.” Joe says.

--

The kids end up back at the house, and the cat has fallen asleep.

“Mom!” Zoe shouts as they run up to the door.

Their mom comes running out and sees Zoe taking a filthy cat out of her bag.

“What is that?!” Mom exclaims.

“It’s a kitty!” Chloe shouts back.

Zoe lays the cat down in the grass, as Mom comes to take a look.

“I’m getting your father,” She says.

Without having to do anything, Dad runs outside to check it out. You know how dads do. He sees the cat and comes to have a look.

“Where did you find this poor creature?” He asks.

“In the woods on our adventure,” Joe says.

“So, you kids had a day then,” Dad says, smiling.

The group is exhausted, and want to help the cat. Mom and Dad say they will take care of the cat, and the kids should get some rest. They go up to their rooms, and hear Dad’s car leave.

Mom brings everyone a snack. She was nervous about the woods, but the kids proved they could handle it. They’ve earned a snack.

A few hours pass, and Dad returns. The kids run downstairs to investigate. Dad is walking up the driveway carrying a cardboard box with holes in it.

“What is that? Where is kitty?” Chloe asks.

Dad comes in the house smiling. He places the box down and opens the lid. The cat hops out with a bandage on his leg, and runs up to Chloe purring. He seems to be in a way better mood now.

“He’s fixed!” Zoe exclaims hugging dad.

Dad smiles and pets the cat. “What do you kids think, do we have another family member?”

The kids look up at Dad, confused.

“I’m asking if you want to keep him,” Dad says.

“Oh, yes! Kitty can stay!” Chloe exclaims picking up the cat and squeezing him.

“Yeah! Let’s name him Tiger!” Joe says, petting their new pet.

“Why Tiger?” Dad asks.

“That’s what Einstein named his cat!” Joe says.

“Einstein? Like Albert Einstein?” Dad questions.

“Yeah! We met him in the woods, do you know him?” Dad looks skeptical, but plays along.

“I know who he is, he was a German scientist that studied physics! He was a very important man. I didn’t know he had a cat!” Dad says.

“A scientist, wow!” Zoe says, thinking about the man in the woods.

“Actually, I think I have just the thing for you adventurers,” Dad says as he rifles through a drawer. “Found it! It’s a compass, just like Einstein’s Dad gave to him.” Dad places it in Joe’s hands.

“Wow! Einstein had one of these?” Joe says as the kids marvel at the compass.

“Yes, and he was very curious about why it pointed North! I’ll leave that to you to figure out when you’re on your adventures.” Dad says.

“So, what did he say to you out there?” Mom asked.

“He said, ‘In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” Zoe says confidently, proud of herself for remembering it.

“Oh, that’s a very famous quote! Well, it looks like you kids did just that.” Mom says.

The kids look up at Mom confused.

“You made a choice to bring this cat back here, and got through a challenge. Now you have a new pet! Einstein would be proud. I’m proud!” Mom says.

The kids gather around their new pet, Tiger to watch him purr and roll around.

“Wow, you’re right! How cool!” Joe says.

“Maybe you’ll create a famous equation too! Someday you’ll learn about e=mc2 and remember Tiger!” Dad says.

The kids play with their new pet Tiger, proud of themselves for overcoming a difficulty, and resulting in opportunity.
